The Importance of Creating A New Year’s Resolution

The Importance of Creating A New Year’s Resolution

Where did New Year’s Resolutions originally stem from? It’s told that the custom of creating a New Year’s Resolution originated over 4,000 years ago from ancient Babylonian culture

It’s somewhat unbelievable that over 4,000 years have passed and we’re still following these ancient traditions today! You might be wondering “why are we still following such a behind the times, outdated tradition?” Well, in reality, this tradition isn’t outdated; in fact it’s more valuable in today’s society than ever before. With all the commotion set aside from this past year, I believe there’s one thing we can all agree on. After all the craziness 2020 brought forth, a New Year’s Resolution just may be the perfect opportunity to revaluate yourself, your goals, and what’s lacking in your life that could keep you motivated into 2021!

Turn Your New Year’s Resolution into a Lifestyle

new year, new you

Setting a New Year’s Resolution may appear to be a simple concept, but in fact it’s quite the opposite. When we become motivated enough to apply this resolution to our day to day routines, it can actually completely change your life around. This is the outcome when you set your mind on molding your resolution into a new lifestyle. Wouldn’t it be great to set a goal for the upcoming year, AND have it last longer than a few months? This is generally what we’re trying to achieve, although it’s very common that we neglect to retain the motivation to maintain this lifestyle. When setting these goals, however, it does not have to be the case. It truly all begins with a new mindset and choosing the right, attainable goal. Be specific.

Creating a concrete goal is very important. First, determine your exact goal and what you are trying to achieve. We have a tendency to make goals that are far too big to maintain on a day to day basis and become discouraged. In an effort to avoid this, it’s imperative to determine which goal you can work on and feel driven towards consistently.  Once you have a tangible, realistic goal it’s time to start setting a time frame. You should be setting yourself up for success. Now it’s time to breathe life into that New Year’s Resolution goal. Change something to make it happen. If you’re trying to catch up on your projects that you fell behind on last year, you should be positioning enough manpower, cashflow, and allotted time per day to meet your exact deadline. Don’t fall into the trap of setting a goal, yet not adjusting your habits or daily operations to achieve it.

Struggling Is Part of the Process

To figure out the best formula for success, you should first understand why you decided to create this goal in the first place. Something needs to change, and change, is not always going to be easy, although, change is necessary for growth. Struggling is part of the process. If you don’t achieve your goal at the first go around, that’s okay. If this struggle seems too unbearable, ask yourself how your life will change when you accomplish this goal. These are the types of things that keeps us motivated. Will reaching this goal resolve a problem in your life? Will it bring you closer to your loved ones? Will it make your job easier? Will it bring joy to someone you care about? The possibilities are endless, therefore important to make your goals tangible.

do what is right, not what is easy

Take some time to evaluate what you did, what worked, and what didn’t. For example, if you incentivized your employees to work overtime and you still didn’t reach your deadline, a component of the process still needs to change. You added the extra hours and additional finances, but you didn’t hire additional employees to get the job done in time. Try to manipulate your plan in a way that is realistic and achievable.

Celebrate Your Achievements

The key to ensuring your New Year’s Resolution is obtained, is to celebrate EACH achievement along the way. Goals aren’t achieved overnight. We tend to always focus on the end goal rather than all the hurdles we’ve overcome during our journey. You may not be where you intended yet, but you’ve done a heck of a job growing into who you are now. These small celebrations can be the slingshot that propels you to keep going and reach your optimal potential.

Stay Focused and Finish Strong

Our number one goal is to create a New Year’s Resolution that you can transform into a lifestyle, so you don’t lose focus. After all the hard work and determination that you’ve put in, it’s time to carry your goal on throughout the rest of the year and push even further into the next year. Continue to remind yourself every day that it will all be worth it in the end. We’re in it together.
