How Leviton Began

Leviton was founded in 1906 by Isidor Leviton, starting off by manufacturing brass mantles tips for natural gas lighting in Manhattan. These mantle tips were sold in a push carton the Browery in the lower side of Manhattan. He also ventured into screw-in lamp holders for Thomas Edison’s lamp in 1910, and within 10 years the lamp holders were used in almost every household in New York. Leviton moved to Greeenpoint in Brooklyn in the 1920s, and in 1936 the company went on to build shop and warehouse, which stands to this day. In 1937 an acquisition of the American Insulated Wire Company was finalized, a move that extended their product lines to wires, cables and cords. A purchase of Deal Electric Company in 1950 saw the growth of Levision’s empire, the Deal Electric Company was renamed Leviton Canada. By 1953, Leviton was producing fluorescent lighting. Harold Leviton, Isidor Leviton’s son was named President and CEO of the company and he moved the company to its new Headquarters in Little Neck, Queens, New York in 1973
